The following three haiku poems were penned on a recent train journey out of London during which I found myself contemplating the common rat (Rattus norvegicus). Love them or hate them, one cannot deny their prevalence. In fact, the reality that we co–exist with millions and millions of rats all around us is something that has long been ratified (I’ll get my coat).
Rat (Haiku)
By Matthew White
A dormant rat lies
On the Victoria line
Loud enough to hear.
Filth (Haiku)
By Matthew White
Remnants of rodent
Opportunists remain; filth
Feeding the filthy.
Rodent In Sight (Haiku)
By Matthew White
Hated hurriers,
Death–bringers, disease–bearers—
Humankind observed.
