When They Create
A Poem Inspired By My Daughter

This week’s offering on Idle and Blessed Poetry is a rondeau poem. It was inspired by my beautiful 8 year old daughter who surprised and delighted my wife and I a few days ago by showing us 2 poems which she had typed into the Notes app on my wife’s phone. You can see my daughter’s poems below. I know I’m biased but I think they are wonderful!
My daughter’s poems led me to reflect further and to dwell upon the lovely purity, imagination and wonder of children’s creativity. The following poem owes its existence to the wholesome artistry of my daughter and is dedicated to her and to all other young curators of beauty.
When They Create
When they create my heart expands;
a pride exhumes the entombed sands
of love reduced to artefact
to find that it is still intact
and poised to gleam where it will land.
A child constructs with wonder fanned
and paints with joy of open hands
immune to cynicism’s hack
when they create.
This world will see you sink or stand—
plying you with conquests grand,
besetting you with creeping black,
seducing you to point of lack.
Their world is filled with beauty scanned
when they create.

If a paid subscription is unrealistic at this time, would you consider buying me a coffee to help keep me caffeinated and writing?
I am grateful to everyone who chooses to spend some of their precious time here. Your presence is a gift. Thank you!

“Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”” — Matthew 19:14 (NIV)

Echo Hayley's comment below and want to encourage her to keep writing as she experiences the world. Your first line was a heart expander too, I felt quite emotional and tuned in again to parental joy!
The start and the end of "The Start and the End" ie. The first and last lines, are phenomenal. I can't believe she's 8. Awe/wonder inspiring ✨️ 💕
