Delight
The Buried Treasure Of Psalm 37

I had the joy of becoming reacquainted with Psalm 37 this week and its wonderful fourth verse:
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
I’m not sure whether you have passages of Scripture that seem to follow you through life but Psalm 37:4 is one of those for me. This “delightful” (sorry!) verse took hold of me from a very early age and is showing no signs of loosening its grip.
I love what a certain Charles Haddon Spurgeon writes about this verse in his classic devotional, The Promises of God:
“Delight in God has a transforming power. It lifts a person above the gross desires of our fallen nature. Delight in the Lord is not only sweet in itself, but it sweetens the whole soul until the longings of the heart become such that the Lord can safely promise to fulfil them. Is that not a grand delight that moulds our desires until they are like the desires of God?”
It seemed only right that this week’s poetic offering should try and capture something of the riches and beauty of Psalm 37:4. I hope it speaks to you!
Delight
What kind of pleasure is this?
As I behold, I become
aligned with merits flowing
from Fount of ev’ry blessing.
What kind of treasure is this?
The honeyed bliss of learning
my true delight whilst yearning
for desires to be redeemed.
What kind of measure is this?
A grace that wraps round spindles
that once twisted my heart. Now
unravelled and unwinding.
What kind of leisure is this?
Has duty become play?
Are brittle walls collapsing?
Will heart stay soft today?

I really enjoyed this poem, thank you for sharing it.
Psalm 32:8 is the one that follows me. “I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go. I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”
